The main building of the Goldman School of Public Policy at U.C. Berkeley, built over a century ago, underwent a major seismic retrofit plus the addition of a new, 13,000 gsf annex. Site limitations required that the annex be partially set into a hillside with the layout calling for 32-foot clear spans. An innovative structure of reinforced concrete and timber made the project feasible within its budget.
