Hillside Residence

The architecture of this award-winning San Francisco hillside residence includes a number of features that posed unusual structural challenges, from the absence of view-blocking corner columns to a suspended mezzanine.

  • The structure is a hybrid design with a steel frame gravity system consisting of tube steel columns, steel floor beams and curved steel roof beams. Steel X braces and plywood non-bearing shearwalls were combined to resist lateral loads.
